New Clinical Trial Demonstrates the Synergistic Benefit of the Memory Health Formula

An exciting new clinical trial published in Clinical Nutrition Journal has demonstrated that the Memory Health formula shows “synergistic” benefits for memory.

Researchers in Ireland have found that a daily supplement containing a combination of omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, meso-zeaxanthin, zeaxanthin, and vitamin E- the ingredients in Memory Health- “may improve working memory in cognitively healthy older adults.” This study illustrates the long-term benefits of targeted brain health supplements in maintaining and improving healthy cognitive function in older adults.

The Basics

This 24-month clinical trial included 60 cognitively healthy older people who were randomly assigned to either the active supplement group or the placebo group. The supplement contained one gram of fish oil, 22mg of carotenoids (precisely 10mg lutein, 10mg meso-zeaxanthin, and 2mg zeaxanthin), and 15mg of vitamin E, which are the same ingredients in Memory Health.

Researchers from the Waterford Institute of Technology, Mercer’s Institute for Successful Aging, University Hospital Waterford, and the Royal College of Surgeons Ireland used two cognitive tests to measure the group’s working memory– the Repeatable Battery for the Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS) and the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA).

The Results

The active group (those who took the Memory Health supplement) showed a significant increase in their omega-3 fatty acids and carotenoids compared to the placebo group and performed better on memory tasks than the placebo group. According to the researchers, as the memory tasks increased in difficulty, the active group outperformed the placebo group.

This clinical trial identified that the increase in carotenoid and omega-3 levels among the active group was directly related to the increase in their intellectual performance, citing the “magnitude of change of carotenoid concentrations in tissue as well as the omega-3s and carotenoid concentrations in blood were related to the magnitude of change in working memory performance.”

The data from this trial also showed that the supplement led to improvements in attention and cognition in the active group compared to the placebo group.

The Significance

This clinical trial reinforces what we already know– the vital importance of nutrition in improving cognition among older adults. While each ingredient of the Memory Health formula can be effective individually, this trial emphasizes that they have a more substantial impact on memory and cognitive function when formulated together. The improvements in working memory among the active supplement group compared to the placebo group emphasize the vital link between nutritional enrichment and healthy cognitive function.

Working memory plays an essential role in our day-to-day function. Working memory is our ability to retain a small amount of information in a readily accessible form, like remembering information from a conversation or dialing a phone number someone just told you. Caring for your working memory can improve your ability to retain information, your decision making processes, and your problem solving skills.

In the long term, a combination of omega-3 fatty acids, carotenoids, and vitamin E may play a significant role in reducing cognitive decline. The Memory Health supplement formula has received three treatment patents to prevent and treat neurodegenerative disease and is supported by five clinical trials.
